Comparing The Similarities And Differences Of ATVs And Motorcycles

Alternative modes of transportation in the form of motorized bikes are available. These are all terrain vehicles, ATVs and motorcycles. In both cases the driver straddles the seat and uses the handlebars to adjust speed and steer the direction of the vehicle. There are a variety of differences as well between these types of transportation.
ATVs are more commonly known as quad bikes and three-wheelers, which as the names suggest have 3- 4 wheels. Motorbikes in comparison only have two wheels, but may sometimes have a third if a side car is attached. The additional two wheels on the ATV give the machine greater stability when it is travelling slowly and over tricky terrain. The two wheels of a motorcycle require the driver to have more skill and stability at varying speeds.
Inventing the two popular did not happen simultaneously, in fact the motorcycle was invented a whole century before the common ATV, the quad bike. The motorcycle was created by Gottileb Daimler, who attached a gas engine to a wooden bike. The four-wheeled ATV was originally a beginner recreational machine.
Passengers: It is illegal in some places, such as the United States, for an ATV to carry passengers. This is for safety reasons because the manoeuvrability of the vehicle is compromised. In comparison motorcycles are comparatively safer to carry passengers on that the ATVs.
Quad bikes are bigger than motorbikes and so occupy more space during storage and transportation. It is illegal to drive on public roads with ATVs and so persons wishing to make use of them must transport them in specialized trailers to the intended destination. Their two-wheeled counterparts on the other hand can be ridden on public roads or transported a trailer.
Safety: in terms of serious injuries and death caused by accidents, motorcycles are safer than ATVs. Motorcycle drivers have a tendency of wearing helmets particularly when travelling off road in comparison to the ATV drivers who do not. The quad bikes, being heavy, can also crush the driver during an accident causing much more serious injuries or death.
Other similarities: engine sizes are no the same in all makes and models of these two types of vehicles. The engine size determines how powerful an ATV or a motorcycle is going to be. Miniature versions of these vehicles are available for use by children. Adult supervision should be present whenever the child is on the vehicle because misuse and misfortune can result in terrible injuries. Safety gear should be worn at all times, particularly helmets.
